• Joe Qiu - Bassoonist

  • Joe Qiu divides his time between modern and historical instruments. His musical interests span from Bach cantatas to improvising with the Resonance FM Radio Orchestra and creating 'living programme notes' before performances in Peckham's multi story carpark with the Multi-Story Orchestra.

Recently Joe has appeared as guest principal with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the Netherlands Symphony Orchestra and Balletorkest Amsterdam. He has also worked with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra. Early music ensembles Joe has performed with include the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, the Dunedin Consort, Irish Baroque Orchestra and Ensemble Marsyas.

Joe was a happy member of the London Schools Symphony Orchestra whilst at school, and has had a number of teachers during his studies, including Bram van Sambeek, Jos de Lange, Daniel Jemison, Graham Sheen and Lizbeth Elliott for modern bassoon, and Donna Agrell, Benny Aghassi and Peter Whelan for historical instruments. He holds a first class bachelor’s degree from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London and recently completed his master's degree at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague achieving a 9.5/10 with distinction for his final recital.

Always looking to take music to new places, Joe has enjoyed appearing at the contemporary classical clubnight Filthy Lucre in London and in the band of jazz pianist Julian Schneeman. So far music has taken Joe into places as far from traditional venues as car parks, prisons, nightclubs and schools, as well as many of Europe’s best concert halls.

Joe teaches bassoon at the Wandsworth Music Academy and is at his most content when working with young people.

Outside of music Joe is fanatic about Crystal Palace football club and Chinese food.

Joe is grateful to have received financial support from the Countess of Munster Musical Trust, the City of London Corporation, Loan Fund for Musical Instruments, and Help Musicians UK.
