Bassoonist Joe Qiu divides his time between modern and historical instruments. His musical interests are diverse and wide-ranging – from Bach cantatas to improvising with the Resonance FM Radio Orchestra and creating 'living programme notes' before performances of Beethoven in Peckham's multi story carpark. Recently he has appeared as guest principal with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the Dunedin Consort, Irish Baroque Orchestra and Ensemble Marsyas, and he has also worked with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra and the Netherlands Symphony Orchestra (Orkest van het Oosten.)

This season includes engagements as soloist with the Leids Barok Ensemble in works by Vivaldi and Fasch, a solo recital in the Nieuwe Kerk, Den Haag, to be broadcast on Radio West, and a European tour as guest principal with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment and Masaaki Suzuki.

Joe has been selected for a number of academies and courses, including the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment Experience Scheme, Aldeburgh Young Artists, the Residentie Orkest Master Programme, and the London Sinfonietta Academy. He is a member of Pumbaa Winds, a wind ensemble based in Amsterdam, and Scherzini, a wind quintet performing on period instruments. Joe was a member of the London Schools Symphony Orchestra under Peter Ash whilst at school.

Always looking to take music to new places, Joe has enjoyed appearing at the contemporary classical clubnight Filthy Lucre in London and in the band of jazz pianist Julian Schneeman. So far music has taken Joe into places as far from traditional venues as car parks, prisons, nightclubs and schools, as well as many of Europe’s top concert halls.

Joe has had a number of teachers during his studies, including Bram van Sambeek, Jos de Lange, Daniel Jemison, Graham Sheen and Lizbeth Elliott for modern bassoon, and Donna Agrell, Benny Aghassi and Peter Whelan for historical instruments. He holds a first class bachelor’s degree from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London and is completing his master's degree at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague. As an educator himself he has worked as bassoon coach for the London Schools Symphony Orchestra, initiated and organised school workshops and an orchestral side by side session with young musicians, as well running a private teaching studio.

Outside of music Joe is fanatic about Crystal Palace football club and Chinese food.

Joe is grateful to have received financial support from the Countess of Munster Musical Trust, the City of London Corporation and the Loan Fund for Musical Instruments during the course of his studies.

  • Teaching

As of Summer 2017 I will be taking new bassoon students in London. I put an emphasis on creativity in my teaching and often combine elements of composition, improvisation and singing with the more technical aspects of bassoon playing. I am always happy to offer a free trial lesson to see if we are a good match. Please use the contact form below for further information!
