• Joe Qiu - Bassoonist


  • Joe Qiu divides his time between modern and historical instruments. His musical interests include baroque continuo playing, free improvisation and working with young people on a range of musical projects as well working in symphony orchestras and chamber ensembles.


    Joe has appeared as guest principal with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the Netherlands Symphony Orchestra and Balletorkest Amsterdam, and has also recently worked with the London Symphony Orchestra, the Arnhem & The Hague Philharmonic orchestras, as well as Peckham's Multi-Story Orchestra.

    He is currently on trial for the position of Co-Principal with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment and other recent early music engagements as principal bassoon include Irish Baroque Orchestra, La Nuova Musica & the Dunedin Consort.


    Joe was a happy member of the London Schools Symphony Orchestra whilst at school, and has had a number of teachers during his studies, including Bram van Sambeek, Jos de Lange, Daniel Jemison, Graham Sheen and Lizbeth Elliott for modern bassoon, and Donna Agrell, Benny Aghassi, Peter Whelan and Alastair Mitchell for historical instruments. He holds a first class bachelor’s degree from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London and recently completed his masters studies at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague.


    Joe teaches bassoon at the Wandsworth Music Academy and is at his most content when working with young musicians.


    Outside of music Joe is fanatic about Crystal Palace football club and Chinese food.
